A Practice for Everyday Life

Edward Hopper’s New York, published to coincide with an extensive survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2022, documents Edward Hopper’s relationship with New York City through his paintings, drawings and prints. The publication is punctuated with previously unseen material from the Sanborn Hopper Archive, bringing focus to Hopper as an individual through journals, correspondence and other ephemera.

Manhattan Bridge Loop wraps around the cover, paired with blocky, stacked typography in reference to the forms often seen in Hopper’s works. The edges of the hardcover case are flush cut to the book block, re-iterating the architectural nature of New York and revealing an unconventional blue-dyed board that echoes the tones within Hopper’s palette.

Headings throughout are set in the APFEL Type Foundry’s Friedel, a typeface drawn from the 1965 specimen for Solitaire, published by the American type foundry Visual Graphics Corporation. Hopper’s works are divided into eight sections, each separated by dividers with a colour palette drawn from archival materials.
