A Practice for Everyday Life

Marking the 100th anniversary of Lucian Freud’s birth, this large-format book accompanies New Perspectives at the National Gallery – the first major survey of the artist’s work in 10 years. The exhibition and catalogue present Freud’s work from new perspectives through the lens of new research, introducing the artist to a new generation of audiences and scholars.

Our design approach is inspired by the curatorial approach as well as our research visit to Freud’s home and studio. The colour palette is derived from the dense paint daubs covering many of the wall surfaces at his studio, and the primary typeface was also used on the cover of a painting book that Freud kept at his side for reflection. The design is a constant balance between classical proportions and contemporary applications, with classical engraved-style typography used in a non-conventional manner through oversized chapter titles and minimal margins.
