Lee Miller is a publication on the genre-defying photographer, accompanying an extensive retrospective of her work at Tate, London. The book spans her career, from her beginnings as a model and her early surrealist photography within the Parisian avant-garde, to her distinctive approach to fashion and war photography.
The book’s design is inspired by surrealist printed ephemera, with a playful approach to image pairings and a rich red tone on the cover drawn from surrealist journals, which were instrumental in championing photography as an art form in the 1930s.
On the cover, the large treatment of Miller’s name is offset by the lightness of the letterforms. Throughout, the custom headline typeface features sharp, angular forms that complement Miller’s photography, which was shaped by her attention to the unexpected and her commitment to exploring the complex issues of her time.
