A Practice for Everyday Life

Exhibition 13, held at Rapha’s London Clubhouse in 2021, explored the history of the Tour de France since its conception in 1903. We were commisioned to design a print, along with the likes of Paul Smith, Colophon Foundry and Accept & Proceed. Each print commemorates a moment of significance within each decade of the Tour.

To mark the 1950s, our contribution focuses on the first team formed entirely out of riders from North Africa at the 1950 Tour. The team members – Max Charroin, Custodio Dos Reis, Ahmed Kebaili, Marcel Molinès, Abdel-Kader Zaaf and Marcel Zelasco – were of Algerian and Moroccan descent and won two stages of the 1950 Tour. We chose to shine a light on this important moment in history by foregrounding the riders’ names. Utilising a paired-back colour palette, the type is set in APFEL Type Foundry’s Friedel and screen-printed on GF Smith Extract Flint.
