In summer 2022, Waddington Custot presented Peter Blake: Under Milk Wood, a play by Dylan Thomas on Cork Street. For over 40 years, Blake has been working on a series of watercolours, collages and drawings, illustrating Thomas’ play that tells the story of the dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of a mythical Welsh town.
This is our second collaboration with Blake and the gallery, following the Frieze Masters presentation in 2017; the design was conceived with Blake's distinctive handwriting – reinforcing his close association to this personal project. We were commissioned to design marketing materials, including posters, digital invites and window vinyl. The lettering was set in a dreamlike manner, enveloping a selection of surreal images from the series. As the exhibition marks Blake's 90th birthday we also designed a bag to mark the occasion with a quote from Peter printed in pink on manila brown, colours inspired by the watercolours in the exhibition.
