A Practice for Everyday Life

Published to coincide with New Paintings, Michael Simpson’s 2019 solo exhibition at Blain|Southern, this monograph provides an overview of the last thirty years of his practice, featuring more than 140 paintings and drawings alongside essays by Barry Schwabsky, Jennifer Sliwka and Mark Wallinger.

We worked closely with Simpson to create a comprehensive catalogue of his work, with a number of image treatment conventions in mind – larger landscape paintings are laid out to avoid crossing the central gutter, polyptychs are presented equidistant from one another, and single works are placed alone on the page. Our choice of format and layout for the publication was driven by the requirements of Simpson’s paintings, and different series of works are delineated through the use of installation imagery. Futura was chosen for both cover type and body text at Simpson’s request, as its visual sensibility felt particularly appropriate for use alongside his work.
