Accompanying an exhibition at Kettle’s Yard, Megan Rooney: Echoes & Hours brings together a new body of work by the artist, encompassing painting, performance and a large-scale mural.
The publication’s cover features Rooney’s work Up Comes Yesterday as a one-to-one detail, with typography set in a thin cut of Spezia Serif. A classical and light typographic approach feeds into the book’s layout, where essays are framed with generous margins to create a sense of timelessness.
Plate images are combined with delicately reproduced details which draw attention to the resemblances that appear across the surfaces of different paintings, emerging from Rooney’s practice of working on multiple canvases simultaneously. Three immersive gatefolds remind us of the scale of Rooney’s work, created through a choreography of dynamic strokes. Playful typographic details throughout reinforce this sense of gestural movement, echoing the performances Rooney creates alongside her painting practice.
