A Practice for Everyday Life

Marine Hugonnier: Le cinéma à l’estomac brings together a selection of the artist’s works since 1998 and accompanies a large-scale exhibition at Jeu de Paume, Paris. Situated between documentary and fiction, Hugonnier’s practice explores the politics of vision and spans across film, photography and works on paper.

The publication’s acetate jacket wraps the screenprinted black cover, with the vibrant colours referencing Hugonnier’s work using film, while also differentiating the French and English editions of the book. The cover’s bold approach continues on the opening pages, with the title set typographically across a series of cut short pages. The plates alternate between immersive moments of full bleed still frames and gridded compositions of multiple images which contextualise the work. The essays, spread across the book on cut-short pages, are typeset in red for French and blue for English, with the footnotes’ placement adding a sense of rhythm to the layouts.
