A Practice for Everyday Life

For Frieze Masters 2016, Waddington Custot presented an exhibition celebrating the work of Spanish artist Manolo Millares, which was accompanied by a new publication in both soft- and hard-cover formats. Our design referenced the materials used by the artist in his work, to emphasise the object quality of the publication – the contents pages are brought together with three-hole-sewn binding, encased within an uncoated brown cover. The gloss foil type on both covers contrasts with the rough card, and echoes the artist’s use of deep black pigment in his works. Inside, the type is bold and justified to create a similar dark block effect, balanced by a generous use of white space within the image spreads. The choice of Folio for type throughout the book was influenced by research into 20th-century Spanish typography.
