A Practice for Everyday Life

Following on from our design of the Undergraduate Prospectus for Manchester School of Art, we created the campaign identity for the school’s Degree Show 2015. Developing the ideas we had begun to explore in the design of the Prospectus, the identity for the campaign is based on typography rather than illustration. We took quotations from Walter Crane’s writings on art education as starting point for the Degree Show identity, choosing those that still ring true with art education and practice today. We then developed these edited passages into bespoke typographic images, drawing upon Arts & Crafts approaches to custom lettering but basing the letterforms on a contemporary font: L10 by Or Type. This idea was further explored for the MA Show materials, using different quotes of Crane’s which seemed more concerned with the spirit of postgraduate study. Click here to visit the website.

Walter Crane was a key figure in the Arts & Crafts movement who was Director of Design at the School from 1893–98.

We were drawn to those that expressed ideas and sentiments relating to new art and design, creative development, and the interplay between art, design and craft.
