A Practice for Everyday Life

Cecilia Brunson Projects is a gallery based in Bermondsey, specialising in modern and contemporary Latin American art. We were commissioned to design a new visual identity for the gallery, incorporating a logotype, stationery and templates, the art direction of a new website, and signage for the gallery premises.

Our research began with investigation into vernacular and colloquial Latin American typography, which led us to develop an adaptive logotype structured in three ‘blocks’, whose spacing can be tailored to each application or context. This logotype is set in FS Meridian, a geometric grotesque typeface with humanistic characteristics and a strong sense of rhythm, which was chosen for its visual connections to the examples of vernacular typography we identified through our research. The rich brick-red colour was chosen as a nod to the work of Latin American artist and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada, whose works were often printed onto bold, characterful paper tints; the complimentary palette of paper colours were also derived from this research.
