Into Nature brings together a selection of sculpture, painting and writing by Setsuko that use both traditional Japanese and European modernist aesthetics to respond to the natural world. Accompanying an exhibition at Gagosian, the publication’s design draws on Setsuko’s sensibility to texture and colour.
A lightweight jacket features a detail of a tree sculpture screen-printed in white on the thin ivory paper, as a nod to the materiality of Setsuko’s works made from white enameled terracotta. The same paper is used inside for archival imagery – depicting Setsuko at the Grand Chalet of Rossinière, the photography diffuses through the papers to create a tactile and intimate quality. The interior layout follows a more classic approach with generous use of white space to emphasise the peaceful serenity of Setuko’s works, while also evoking questions of life and death, growth and decay.
