Douglas Coupland’s first major solo exhibition in Europe was held at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam in autumn 2015. The show combines Coupland’s own work with loans from his personal collection, creating a rich tapestry of associations and stories which collectively address themes such as globalisation, terror, pop culture, the internet and social media. We designed this publication to accompany the exhibition – a collection of Coupland’s stories and essays.
The typographic cover design makes reference to the book’s title, Bit Rot, which is a term used to describe the degeneration of digital software over time. The typography and layouts are evocative of early computer bit fonts and displays, with the texts presented in a continuous stream, interrupted by seemingly random changes of typeface, paper stock and typographic glitches.
