Christina Kimeze’s radiant, tactile paintings use introspective figuration to explore themes of freedom, movement, and the blurred boundaries between the private and collective. Showcasing a new body of work, this book accompanies the exhibition Between Wood and Wheel at South London Gallery.
The publication's cover, designed in close collaboration with Kimeze, features a three-colour silkscreen print on linen cloth. Constructed by extracting and recontextualising motifs found in her paintings, the design forms multiple overlapping archways. This interplay of texture and colour directly responds to Kimeze’s distinctive use of materials as she layers dry chalks, oil pastel and wet paints on suede matboard.
The focus of materiality continues throughout the book, with an essay printed on lined paper that echoes the visual verticality that reoccurs in Kimeze’s work. The layout is spacious and quiet, with artworks and details reproduced at a large scale to highlight their richness and depth. Text is typeset in an eccentric sans-serif inspired by Swiss graphic design of the 1950s, chosen for its idiosyncratic details.
