Widely regarded as one of Brazil’s most accomplished contemporary painters, Paulo Pasta simultaneously works across abstraction and figuration. Pasta’s abstract works are dedicated to representing imagined space through geometry and pastel hues, and his figurative works – produced mostly from memory – are landscapes of and around his native São Paulo.
Documenting Pasta’s first exhibition in the UK, the abstract and figurative works are placed rhythmically across the book, creating conversations between works, rather than siloing them into sections. The cover jacket is made from a sheet of celadon green book cloth that, unconventionally, is inverted to have the backing material facing outwards. The vibrant green cloth subtly shows through the mottled backing, referencing the subtle shifts in tonality within Pasta’s abstract works.
The backing material is usually concealed when it is adhered to a board during the bookbinding process.
