A Practice for Everyday Life

As the inaugural show at Firstsite, Colchester’s new art gallery, Camulodunum questioned how history is recovered, represented and re-enacted. Works by international artists from Henry Moore to Ai Weiwei were juxtaposed with historical artefacts from the local museum’s collection. Referencing iron-age coins, Roman typography, and archaeological surveys, we designed the publication that documented the exhibition, intermingling images of works from the show with photographs, posters, and artefacts from Colchester’s colourful history. The book was Swiss-bound with a gold foil cover and embossed typographic emblem, emphasising the interplay of old and new which the exhibition explored.

'Camulodunum' is the Ancient Roman name for the town we now know as Colchester in Essex.
