Internationally renowned for their functional design, quality and long-established family tradition, Birkenstock hosted Hourglass – an event reflecting on the brand’s family tradition and shoe-making history since 1774 through a showcase of its rich archive.
We designed a small publication to accompany and expand upon the exhibition. The book pays homage to a brand which has become synonymous with innovation, documenting Birkenstock’s journey from its first pioneering footbed designs which revolutionised orthopaedics, to its recent collaborations with industry-leading designers.
The Birkenstock Post, the brand’s magazine first published in the 1950s, along with the Bauhaus design principles followed at that time, functioned as a starting point for the design of the publication. These inspirations are visible in the use of the grid in the layout – bold titles, justified texts, images, and their reference numbers are positioned in carefully considered alignments. The essentiality of the cover and the stab-stitch binding allude to the minimalist pragmatism of the Birkenstock brand.
