A Practice for Everyday Life

Held at Marian Goodman Gallery in spring 2019 and curated by Marie Muracciole, Photography, A Wonderfully Inadequate Medium presented a selection of works by the late American artist and theorist Allan Sekula. We designed a small publication to accompany the show, to further explore the relationship between photographic imagery and text which was a central concern within Sekula’s practice.

The publication’s design captures a sense of workman-like ephemerality, which was frequently evident in earlier books about Sekula’s work and which reflects the areas of inquiry he engaged with. Type is set in Univers, contributing a sense of character without feeling nostalgic, and the publication is printed on newsprint throughout.
