A Practice for Everyday Life

We were commissioned to design a new identity and website for Alice Kentridge, a psychotherapist with a particular focus on sexuality, gender and relationship diversity. Instead of a simple typographic response, we chose to foreground imagery that we art directed with photographer Tex Bishop specifically for Alice and her practice.

The photographs of objects are atmospheric and represent the calm, thoughtful space encountered when visiting Alice’s therapy room. They also nod to her practice’s roots in Freud’s psychodynamic therapy and interest in how personal stories sit within wider histories. The objects – mixing antique, contemporary, natural and manmade – are photographed in shadow and without clear focus, alluding to the process of delving into the unconscious in the therapy room.

On the website, four photographs sit on the same baseline akin to frames on bookshelf or desk, evoking the intimacy of Alice’s therapy room. We were inspired by the long tradition of psychoanalytic journals, choosing an elegant book serif throughout the website, which is set in a manner that references the printed page.
