For Frieze Masters 2016, Waddington Custot presented an exhibition celebrating the work of Spanish artist Manolo Millares, with a new publication of his work to accompany the show. Our design referenced the materials used by the artist in his work, to emphasise the object quality of the publication—the contents pages are brought together with three-hole-sewn binding, encased within an uncoated brown card cover. The black gloss foil type on the cover contrasts with the rough card, and echoes the artist’s use of deep black pigment in his works. Inside, the type is bold and justified to create a similar dark block effect, balanced by a generous use of white space within the image spreads. The choice of Folio as the typeface used throughout the book was influenced by our research into twentieth-century Spanish typography.
