Text

The photographic work of Californian artist Jo Ann Callis combines an unsettling and evocative interpretation of sexuality with a distinctive colour and material palette. We were commissioned by Aperture to design this catalogue, to accompany an exhibition of her works at Rose Gallery in New York in June 2014.1

The cover typography uses glyphs resurrected from an old type specimen sheet, and a generous use of white space within focuses the reader’s attention on Callis’ claustrophobic and intimate compositions. The pattern on the endpapers is derived from the distinctive 70s textiles incorporated into some of the works.
