Camulodunum

Exhibition Graphics, Printed Material and Publication

As the inaugural show at Firstsite, Colchester Camulodunum questioned how history is recovered, represented and re-enacted. Works by international artists were juxtaposed with pieces from the local museum's collection. Taking reference from iron age coins, Roman typography, and archaeological surveys, we produced a publication documenting the exhibition alongside photographs, posters, and artefacts from Colchester's colourful history. Swiss binding paired with a gold foiled cover set off this idea of the combination of old and new.

On The Nature of Gothic Architecture

Printed Material

This exhibition curated by Michelle Cotton and held at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, took John Ruskin’s essay ‘On the Nature of Gothic Architecture’ as a starting point to explore ‘medievalism’ in contemporary art. The invitation for the show was an exact reproduction of the first edition of Ruskin’s essay that is held in the British Library, printed as a pamphlet with the details of the opening for the exhibition on the reverse.

Design Research Unit 1942–72

Publication

Founded in 1942, the Design Research Unit was the first consultancy in the country to bring together expertise in architecture, graphics and industrial design. It was a graphic designer’s dream to design this retrospective of their work to accompany the touring exhibition curated by Michelle Cotton. The page layouts hint at the ‘identification manuals’ that were created by DRU for companies like Watneys, and British Rail, and the book is set mostly in Monotype Grotesque, which was used in a lot of earlier studio work. The publication also records the exhibition’s various locations through a series of installation photographs.
